Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) is a semi-crystalline polymer synthesized by the polymerization of H2C=CF2 monomers. The spatial arrangement of CH2 and CF2 groups along the polymer chain determines the unique polarity, unusually high dielectric constant, polymorphism and high piezoelectric and pyroelectric activity of the polymer. How to Make PVDF

PVDF is manufactured by free radical polymerization of 1,1-difluoroethylene (CH2=CF2). The polymerization takes place in the suspension or emulsion. The operating pressure of the polymerization can be from 1 to 20 MPa (10-200 atm), and the temperature can be from 10 to 130 °C.

Performance Characteristics

Firstly, PVDF has excellent piezoelectric properties. Compared with traditional piezoelectric materials, it has a wide frequency bandwidth and high sensitivity of power-to-electricity conversion. Secondly, compared with softer and mechanically less robust perfluorocarbon polymers, PVDF has high mechanical and impact strength and excellent creep resistance under long-term stress and fatigue upon cyclic loading. Finally, PVDF has good machinability, excellent wear resistance, and chemical resistance to different materials such as organic acids, oils, aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons, alcohols, and halogenated solvents.

The excellent properties of PVDF make it a satisfactory material for practical applications. The following are some common applications of PVDF:

  • Coatings: PVDF is known for its exceptional chemical resistance, weatherability, and UV resistance. It is used as a coating material for architectural structures, automotive parts, outdoor signage, and other surfaces that require long-lasting protection against harsh environmental conditions.
  • Piezoelectric Devices: PVDF exhibits piezoelectric properties, meaning it can generate an electrical charge in response to mechanical stress or pressure. It is used in sensors, transducers, actuators, and various electromechanical devices.
  • Membranes: PVDF membranes have high porosity, chemical resistance, and thermal stability. They are used in filtration applications, such as water treatment, gas separation, and blood filtration.
  • Li-ion Batteries: PVDF is used as a binder material in the fabrication of lithium-ion battery electrodes. It helps hold active materials together and enhances the adhesion between electrodes and current collectors, improving the overall performance and stability of the battery.
