Applications Of Organic Fluorides In Materials

Organic fluorides are widely used in various materials, such as liquid crystal materials, sealing materials and battery materials.

  • Liquid crystals (LC) materials. The attributes of organic fluorides such as excellent stability, low polarization give rise to subtle modifications regarding mesophase morphology, melting point and transition temperatures as well as dielectric, optical and visco-elastic properties of the liquid crystals, and thus providing excellent conditions for use in active matrix liquid crystal displays (AM-LCD). Kirsch et al. have recently presented a series of new superfluorinated materials (SFM) that were developed for the use in AM-LCDs. Starting from organic fluorides with simple structures, they synthesized complex five-ring organic fluorides, which are materials with unprecedented properties. These materials show a very high dielectric anisotropy, a low rotational viscosity, a high clearing point and an excellent solubility, which makes them ideal candidates for the utilization in liquid crystal mixtures, even when applied at large concentration without risking crystallization or conversion to smectic phases upon long-term storage at low temperatures[1].

  • Sealing materials. Fluororubber produced by copolymerization of organic fluorides is widely used as sealing materials under harsh conditions. For example, the perfluoroether rubber produced by the copolymerization of perfluoroether is resistant to N2O4 medium, high temperature and low temperature, and is used for sealing rocket fuel systems in missiles and spacecraft. In addition, fluororubber with high fluorine content can bee used for sealing automobile engines to solve the problem of fuel leakage.

Sealing materials.

  • Battery materials. Polymer compounds generated by the polymerization reaction of organic fluorides are widely used as electrode materials and battery casing materials for energy storage devices such as lithium-ion batteries, nickel-metal hydride batteries, lithium-air batteries, and lithium-sulfur batteries. Organic fluorides are also used in battery electrolytes. For example, fluoroethylene carbonate is a commonly used additive for lithium-ion battery electrolytes, which can form a good solid electrolyte interface (SEI) film on the surface of the negative electrode, thereby preventing further decomposition of the electrolyte and improving the low-temperature performance of the electrolyte. In addition, organic fluorides are also used in the preparation of membrane materials for fuel cells.
