Per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are used as a generic term for highly fluorinated aliphatic substances consisting of at least one fully-fluorinated carbon atom (–CF2–). They are a large class of manufactured compounds that have been used in industrial and consumer products for decades due to their specific properties, such as flame retardancy, pollution and water repellent. However, PFAS are thermodynamically stable and highly resistant in hydrolysis, metabolism, photolysis, and other forms of degradation. Thus, PFAS compounds are persistent and eventually accumulate throughout the environment (e.g., groundwater, surface water, soil, sediment, air, plants, etc.) and in living organisms, causing great harm to both the environment and human health. As concerns about the health risks associated with exposure to PFAS have rapidly increased, PFAS have emerged as an emerging pollutant of current concern. It is therefore important that these chemicals are properly analysed and monitored.
