Graphite fluoride‚ also called carbon monofluoride, polycarbon monofluoride‚ polycarbon fluoride‚ carbon fluoride, is a graphite derivative in which fluorine atoms are attached to carbon atoms by covalent C-F bonds. Thus, it belongs to covalent graphite interlayer compound. Its structure is a staggered layer structure, and the distance between the surfaces is twice the distance between carbon and carbon of graphite. Its chemical structure can be expressed by (CFx)n. Where x is an indefinite value, the value is 0 < x < 1.25. When x is 1-1.25, the graphite fluoride is called high fluorinated graphite, while x is 0.5-0.99, it is called low fluorinated graphite. With the increase of fluorine content, the color of graphite fluoride changes from gray black to snow white.

Synthesis, Properties and Application

Graphite fluoride can be synthesized by three methods of high-temperature method (also known as gas phase method), low temperature method (also known as solid phase method) and electrolytic method. Among them, the high temperature method is one of the most common methods because of the simple process and high product purity. The method is to prepare graphite fluoride by direct reaction of fluorine gas with graphite‚ charcoal‚ or pyrolytic carbon powder under high-temperature of 300-600 ℃ for 1-200 h. Graphite fluoride has low surface Gibbs free energy and very small interlayer energy, which endows it unique lubricity, hydrophobicity and lipophobicity. In addition, it has excellent chemical stability and thermal stability. Thus, graphite fluoride can be used as a solid lubricant, waterproof and oil-proof agent, antifouling agent, etc. Moreover, graphite fluoride can be used as an active material for batteries, which can increase the storage life of batteries and can be used to manufacture high energy primary batteries. The obtained batteries materials have been widely used in military, aerospace, metallurgy, mechanical and electrical, chemical and other fields. And the graphite fluoride has also become one of high-performance, high-efficiency and high-tech graphite materials in the world today.
