1-Iodo-1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorodecane can be used for surface modification of microporous polysulfone (PSF) membranes to create amphiphilic surfaces with enhanced antifouling properties.
In this approach, polydopamine (PDA) is coated on the PSF membrane to form an active mediating layer. N,N-dimethylethylenediamine (DMEDA) is then grafted onto the PDA layer via a Michael addition reaction, and the tertiary amine functional groups of DMEDA react with 1-Iodo-1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorodecane to achieve amphiphilic functionalization.
Polydopamine Modified Polysulfone Membrane
PSF membranes were repeatedly washed with water and a water-ethanol mixture (30:70). The washed membrane was immersed in deionized water and then gently shaken in a 2 mg/mL dopamine-tris-HCl buffer solution (10 mmol/L; pH 8.5) at room temperature (RT) for 24 hours. The color of the PSF membrane changed from white to dark brown, indicating dopamine self-polymerization. Subsequently, the PDA-coated membrane was washed with a deionized water/ethanol mixture to remove the loosely bound coating and dried at 60°C under vacuum.
Grafting of DMEDA Molecules
A fresh DMEDA solution (2 mg/mL) was prepared in tris-HCl buffer (10 mmol/L; pH 8.5) to graft the primary amine groups of DMEDA onto the active PDA. The PDA-coated membrane was immersed in the solution and gently shaken at RT for 24 hours. The membrane was then removed and washed with deionized water and ethanol. The DMEDA-grafted PSF-PDA membrane was denoted as PgD.
Grafting of 1-Iodo-1H,1H,2H,2H-Perfluorodecane Molecules
The PgD membrane sample was placed in a round-bottom flask connected to a reflux condenser containing a 2 mg/mL solution of 1-Iodo-1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorodecane in pure methanol. An inert atmosphere was created in the reaction chamber by bubbling N2 gas, maintaining a constant flow rate throughout the reaction. The grafting reaction was carried out at 65°C under reflux conditions for 24 hours. After the reaction was completed, the membrane sample was taken out, washed several times with deionized water, and dried in vacuum at 60°C. The fluorinated membrane was called PgDgF.
