Recombinant Human Collagen Hydrogel in the Treatment of Partial-thickness Burns

Skin is an important defense organ of the human body, but burns can cause serious damage to the skin. Allograft skin and xenograft skin are considered to be the best cover for cutaneous burn wounds, but these materials are now in short supply. To solve this problem, Ben ^[1] et al. developed a standardized production hydrogel dressing based on a novel highly bioactive recombinant human collagen.

They evaluated the efficacy and safety of recombinant human collagen hydrogel in the treatment of partial skin burn wounds by comparing it with xenogeneic skin. To be specific, they studied 21 patients admitted to the hospital within 48 h after cutaneous burns. The wounds were symmetrically isolated along the axis and treated with recombinant human collagen hydrogel or a human-CTLA4-Ig gene-transferred pig skin xenotransplant. The wounds were also regularly recorded, and bacterial drug sensitivity tests, blood and urine tests and electrocardiograms were performed regularly. The results showed that the therapeutic effect of recombinant human collagen hydrogel on partial thickness burn wounds was not significantly different from that of gene-transfected xenogeneic skin grafts.
