The dielectric constant (ε), also known as the relative permittivity, is a measure of a material's ability to store electrical energy in an electric field. It is an important property in many areas of science and engineering, particularly in the study of electromagnetism, materials science, and electrochemistry.
ε is a dimensionless constant that indicates the ease with which a material can be polarized by applying an electric field to an insulating material. The constant is the ratio between the ability of the actual material to carry alternating current and the ability of the vacuum to carry current.
The dielectric constant can be expressed as ε = εs / ε0.
where
ε = dielectric constant
εs = static dielectric constant of the material
ε0 = vacuum dielectric constant
This table lists the dielectric constants of various common fluids in alphabetical order.
