A recent study explored the development of a composite flame-retardant coating for polyester fabrics, incorporating pentamethyldisiloxane (PMDS), phosphites, urea, and sodium alginate. The coating's synthesis involved blending sodium alginate with phosphites and PMDS, utilizing a stepwise preparation process to ensure uniformity and pH stability. This formulation was further applied to polyester fabrics to improve flame retardancy.
Preparation process of coating agent: First, 10 g of sodium alginate was added to 190 g of distilled water and stirred to a paste as a thickener. Subsequently, 12.47 g of phosphorous acid was dissolved in 4.1 g of distilled water, and 8 g of sodium hydroxide was dissolved in an equal amount of distilled water to adjust the pH value of the solution to close to 7. Then, 8 g of pentamethyldisiloxane, 1.2 g of urea, 20 g of thickener and 10 g of water-based adhesive were added to the phosphorous acid solution in sequence, and mechanically stirred at room temperature for 60 minutes to obtain a flame retardant composite coating agent (HUSC).
Coating process: Use a scraper to evenly coat HUSC on one side of the polyester fabric and dry it in an oven at 120 ° C for 10 minutes. The other side of the fabric was treated in the same way. Then, the coated fabric was immersed in a 10 wt% calcium chloride aqueous solution for 30 minutes, and then dried in an oven at 80 ° C to constant weight. Finally, the prepared flame-retardant polyester fabric was named PF-HUSC.
