Application of 3-Aminopropylsilanetriol in the Functionalization of Strontium-Containing Mesoporous Bioactive Glasses

Functionalization of Strontium-Containing Mesoporous Bioactive Glasses (Sr-MBGs) with 3-aminopropylsilanetriol (APST) and carboxyethylsilanetriol sodium salt (CES) imparted zwitterionic surface groups that reduced biomolecule adsorption and bacterial adhesion. The functionalized Sr-MBGs retained their bioactivity and continued to release Sr²⁺ ions, crucial for inducing mineralization.
Experimental Procedure: Zwitterionic Sr-MBGs
Initially, 0.5 g of dried Sr-MBG powder was outgassed overnight under vacuum and then dispersed in 100 mL of absolute ethanol. The quantities of 3-aminopropylsilanetriol (APST) (22~25% in water, Alfa Chemistry) and carboxyethylsilanetriol sodium salt (CES) required for the reaction were determined using the Zhuravlev number, which estimates the density of silanol groups (4.9 SiOH/nm²) on the surface of mesoporous materials. This method allowed for the precise calculation of precursor amounts, based on the specific surface area and available hydroxyl groups on the Sr-MBGs.
Several adjustments were made throughout the process to optimize the grafting efficiency. ζ-potential measurements were utilized to assess the changes in surface charge and guide modifications needed to achieve the desired zwitterionic character.
An equimolar mixture of APST and CES (0.3 mmol each) was added to the ethanol suspension, followed by 24 hours of refluxing at 80°C under nitrogen, with constant stirring (200 rpm). After the reaction, the functionalized Sr-MBGs were filtered, washed three times with absolute ethanol, and dried overnight at 70°C.
