A composite quasi-solid electrolyte is reported, which significantly improves the stability of the electrolyte by adding layered zirconium phosphate -ZrP to an electrolyte containing iodide/triiodide ionic liquid, 1-methyl-3-propylimidazolium phosphate, 4-tert-butylpyridine. The photovoltaic performance of quasi-solid dye-sensitized solar cells DSSCs is improved. When 6 wt% -ZrP is added, the light energy conversion efficiency of DSSCs is increased by more than 2 times to 2.61% compared with DSSCs without -ZrP. This enhancement is mainly explained by studying the dark reaction, the diffusion coefficient of triiodide ions, the exchange current density at the electrolyte/Pt counter electrode interface, and the lifetime of electrons in the mesoscopic TiO film.
-ZrP powders with contents of 0, 3, 6, 9, and 12 wt% relative to the weight of TBP were mixed into the MPIDP electrolyte by ultrasonic treatment. The ratio of raw materials LiI : I : TBP = 0.3M : 0.03M : 0.5M resulted in an I concentration of 0.167M. The quasi-solid DSSC consisted of an 8 μm thick dye-coated TiO thin film electrode, a 500 nm thick counter electrode, Pt, a 50 μm thick spacer, polyethylene, and a composite electrolyte containing -ZrP. The dye-coated TiO2 film electrode was prepared by immersing the TiO2 film in a 3×10M ethanol solution of N719 dye BuN Ru dcbpyH for 15 h. The active area of the DSSC was about 0.09 cm2.
