A 500 mL three-necked flask equipped with a Teflon-coated magnetic stirring bar, a rubber septum, a 250 mL constant pressure addition funnel, and a reflux condenser connected to a nitrogen source and a mineral oil bubbler was charged with 100 mL of anhydrous ether and 24.2 g (100 mmol) of (EtO)2P(0)CFHC(O)OEt in sequence. The resulting homogeneous solution was stirred vigorously and cooled to -78°C in a dry ice/isopropanol bath. 10.0 mL of 11 in a 10.1 M solution of n-butyllithium in n-hexane was added dropwise via syringe to the cooled solution. The resulting bright yellow solution was stirred at -78°C for 30 min, and then 8.1 g (110 mmol) of freshly distilled ethyl formate was added dropwise via syringe. After the bath temperature was equilibrated to -78°C, 110 mL of a 1.0 M solution of diisobutylaluminum hydride (DIBAL) in dichloromethane was added dropwise over 30 minutes via a constant pressure addition funnel. A mild exotherm was observed during the addition of DIBAL, and the cooling bath temperature was maintained below -70°C. The resulting mixture was stirred at -78°C for one hour, then warmed to room temperature (6 hours) and stirred at this temperature overnight. The reaction mixture was transferred to a one-liter flask, then cooled with an ice-water bath and quenched with 200 mL of 6.0 M hydrochloric acid. The organic layer was separated and the aqueous layer was extracted with ether (3 x 30 mL). The combined organic phases were washed with brine (2 x 25 mL), dried over anhydrous MgSO4 and filtered. The solvent was removed by high efficiency distillation under nitrogen to give a pale yellow liquid. The liquid was redistilled by short path distillation at 102-104°C and atmospheric pressure to give 7.3 g (62%) of ethyl p-fluoroacrylate
