Application
Terbium Oxide, also called Terbia, has important role as an activator for green phosphors used in color TV tubes. Meanwhile Terbium Oxide is also used in special lasers and as a dopant in solid-state devices. It is also frequently used as a dopant for crystalline solid-state devices and fuel cell materials. Terbium Oxide is one of the chief commercial Terbium compounds. Produced by heating the metal Oxalate,Terbium Oxide is then used in the preparation of other Terbium compounds.

Synthesis and Adsorption Applications of Terbium Oxide and Reduced Graphene Oxide Composites

Gao, Hui, et al. Materials Research Bulletin, 2016, 77, 111-114.

A composite of terbium oxide (Tb4O7) and reduced graphene oxide (Tb-rGO) was designed and prepared by a simple thermal reduction method. The Tb-rGO composite exhibits the typical green emission of terbium ions and the blue self-luminescence of graphene at 440 nm. In addition, the study also confirmed that Tb-rGO exhibits good adsorption and removal ability for rhodamine B (RhB).
Preparation and dye adsorption of Tb-rGO composite
· Using the modified Hummers' method, graphene oxide (GO) was created from flake graphite powder. Tb(NO3)3 solution was produced by dissolving Tb(NO3)3 powders in deionized water.
· A solution of Tb(NO3)3 (15 ml of 0.3 mg ml-1 ) was slowly mixed into the GO solution (30 ml of 2 mg ml-1) and stirred for 20 minutes at room temperature to create a uniform system.
· After drying the water, the mixture underwent calcination at 500°C under an H2/Ar (volume ratio 1:5) atmosphere with a flow rate of 3 ml/h for 30 minutes. The chamber was then gradually cooled to room temperature and the resulting products were collected. The reaction involved the simultaneous decomposition of Tb(NO3) into terbium oxide (Tb4O7) and the reduction of GO.
· Dye adsorption experiments were performed by mixing Tb-rGO solid powder (10 mg) and 20 ml RhB solution (2.5 ppm) at room temperature under natural light.

Applications of Terbium (III,IV) Oxide Nanoparticles in Food Analysis

Castillo-García, et al. Journal of agricultural and food chemistry, 2012, 60(47), 11741-11747.

Based on a spectrofluorometer-based sensitized luminescence detection system, terbium (III,IV) oxide (Tb4O7) nanoparticles (NPs) were used as analytical reagents to determine lasalicylate (LAS) and salicylate (SAL) in food samples. The results showed that the detection limits of LAS and SAL using Tb4O7 NPs were 1.0 and 4.0 ng mL -1, respectively, with relative standard deviation values in the range of 2.3-3.8%.
Detection of LAS and SAL with Tb4O7 NPs
· LAS Detection: Solutions with LAS concentrations ranging from 3 to 4000 ng/mL, Tb4O7 NPs at 62.5 μM (equal to 0.25 mM terbium ions), TOPO at 50 μM, Triton X-100 at 0.08%, hexamine buffer solution at 1 mM (pH 6.2), and 2-propanol at 2.5% were prepared in 5 mL volumetric flasks. Luminescence intensity was measured at λex 318 nm and λem 545 nm after 5 minutes, using an 8 nm bandwidth for both excitation and emission slits.
· SAL Detection: Solutions were prepared in 5 mL volumetric flasks for SAL detection with concentrations ranging from 20 to 1250 ng/mL. The solutions contained Tb4O7 NPs at 0.11 mM (equivalent to 0.44 mM terbium), TOPO at 75 μM, Triton X-100 at 0.04%, imidazole buffer solution at 3.25 mM (pH 7.2), and 2-propanol at 2.5%. Luminescence intensity was measured under the same instrumental settings as mentioned above.
