1H,1H,2H,2H-Perfluorododecyltrichlorosilane Used to Prepare Superhydrophobic and Oleophobic Materials

Sengupta A, et al. Applied Surface Science, 2016, 363, 346-355.

1H,1H,2H,2H-Perfluorododecyltrichlorosilane (PFDTS) has extremely low surface free energy. By modifying it with hydrophilic zirconium hydroxide through simple one-pot chemistry, the preparation of superhydrophobic and oleophobic nanostructured materials can be achieved. In this method, the long chain of PFDTS acts as a protruding structure on the sample surface when it is bonded to zirconium through -O-Si-.
PFDTS modified zirconium hydroxide surface
· 0.75 g of Zr(OH)4·nH2O powder was dispersed in 50 mL of toluene by magnetic stirring and sonication for 15 min. To this dispersion, 1.75 mL TEA was added with stirring under N2 atmosphere at room temperature.
· Then, a fluorochemical modification of Zr(OH)4·nH2O with 18.7 wt% PFD was carried out by adding 2.0 mL of a PFDTS dispersion in toluene to the above dispersion with stirring. The N2 atmosphere was maintained throughout the reaction in order to prevent any undesired reaction and to allow effective surface modification of the hydroxide.
· The stirring was continued for ~8 h to allow a homogeneous fluorochemical modification of Zr(OH)4·nH2O. The product was then isolated by centrifugation of the dispersion at 6000 rpm for 15 min. It was then washed and dried to obtain PFD functionalized Zr(OH)4·nH2O powder.

Preparation of 1H, 1H, 2H, 2H-Perfluorododecyltrichlorosilane Graft-Modified Fiber Membrane

Zhu Z, et al. Chinese Chemical Letters, 2020, 31(10), 2619-2622.

In order to develop biomimetic membranes with superhydrophobicity and superoleophilicity, α-Fe2O3 nanowires and 1H, 1H, 2H, 2H-perfluorodecyltrichlorosilane (FTCS) were used to modify the electrospinning membrane. Benefiting from the rough membrane structure wrapped by nanowires and low surface free energy FTCS, the prepared membrane exhibits superhydrophobicity (WCA=156°) and superoleophilicity (OCA=0°), and can be used to separate highly emulsified aqueous oils with high permeate flux and separation efficiency.
Synthesis of the fibrous membrane
· The composite membrane was developed via emulsion electrospinning, in situ synthesis of α-Fe2O3 nanowires as well as fluorination processes.
· Membrane materials were prepared by co-electrospinning of polysulfonamide/polyacrylonitrile (PSA/PAN) emulsion solution.
· The biomimetic fibrous membrane with superhydrophobicity and superoleophilicity fabricated from various concentrations of Fe (NO3)3·9H2O/urea (creating membrane roughness) and various concentrations of FTCS (lowering membrane surface free energy) was denoted as Fx-Fey@PSA/PAN, where x stands for the concentration of Fe(NO3)3 9H2O/urea and y stands for the concentration of FTCS, respectively.
