Plant-Derived Compounds Such as Undecyl Acetate Regulate Insect Juvenile Hormone

Juvenile hormone functions as a hormone exclusively found in insects to control development and reproduction as well as dormancy alongside multiple other physiological functions. This study found multiple JH agonists (JHA including undecyl acetate) and antagonists (JHAN including undecyl aldehyde) in plant essential oils that produce ovarian development delays in female Asian tiger mosquitoes (Aedes albopictus).
This work examined insecticidal properties of Juvenile Hormone Analogs and Juvenile Hormone Antagonists by recording death rates among treated 3rd instar Aedes albopictus larvae. All tested compounds exhibited significant insecticidal activity, with mortality rates exceeding 50%. Notably, two pairs of compounds, undecyl acetate/aldehyde and dodecyl acetate/aldehyde, demonstrated particularly strong larvicidal effects.
Undecyl acetate/aldehyde and dodecyl acetate/aldehyde were further evaluated using a concentration-dependent β-galactosidase assay to analyze how varying concentrations influenced their JHA and JHAN activities. In the JHA assays, the absorbance readings for undecyl acetate and dodecyl acetate increased with higher concentrations, whereas the JHAN assays showed no significant differences across concentrations. In contrast, neither undecyl nor dodecyl aldehyde exhibited any JHA activity, even at elevated concentrations.
