Triethylene Glycol Dibenzoate for Benzoate Plasticizer Formulation

Lang J, et al. Plastics, Additives and Compounding, 2001, 3(6), 30-33.

A new benzoate plasticizer Benzoflex 2888 formulation has been developed for injection molded flexible toy applications, consisting of diethylene glycol dibenzoate (D(EG)DB), triethylene glycol dibenzoate, and dipropylene glycol dibenzoate (D(PG)DB). This work evaluated the properties of this benzoate plasticizer for use in flexible PVC injection molding compounds, including dry blending, fusion behaviour, plasticizer eficiency, toxicity and environmental effects.
Benzoate plasticizer formulation
· The benzoate plasticizer in this work is a specialized plasticizer for PVC that is known for its high solvating properties. It offers quick fusion, superior stain resistance, good stability under UV light, and excellent resistance to aliphatic solvents and oils.
· This benzoate plasticizer is a mixture of diethylene glycol dibenzoate, triethylene glycol dibenzoate, and dipropylene glycol dibenzoate. Unlike other benzoate plasticizers, It has low levels of volatile organic compounds (VOC), a light color (less than 40 APHA), and a mild odor.
· It is recommended for use in injection moulding applications, especially in the production of PVC toys. Compared to DINP plasticizer, the benzoate plasticizer demonstrates superior dry blending and fusion characteristics.
