MEH-PPV serves as a pivotal material in the development of advanced electronic devices due to its exceptional solubility and versatile applications. This conducting polymer is renowned for enhancing the efficiency and brightness of white polymeric light-emitting diodes and is integral in creating devices like polymer solar cells and OLEDs with carbon nanotubes. Its solubility in common organic solvents, attributed to its unique asymmetric side chains, makes it ideal for device fabrication. MEH-PPV finds varied applications in organic photovoltaic cells, organic field-effect transistors, polymer light-emitting diodes, and perovskite solar cells. Notably, it was central to the first bilayer heterojunction polymer solar cell, which, despite yielding a modest power conversion efficiency of 0.04% under monochromatic light, marked a significant leap in our understanding of the physics and chemistry underpinning these technologies.
