In this study, an environmentally benign solid catalyst, Maghnite-H+, was employed to polymerize hexadecamethylcyclooctasiloxane (D8), facilitating the green synthesis of polydimethylsiloxane via heterogeneous catalysis. The polymerization occurs through the opening of monomer rings without requiring solvents or diluents, and only 4 wt% of the catalyst is necessary for the process. Furthermore, a reaction mechanism is proposed to elucidate the function of Maghnite-H+ during the reaction.
Polymerization Procedure
Initially, 0.2 g of Maghnite-H+ was subjected to heating under vacuum with mechanical stirring for 30 minutes prior to its application. The polymerization was conducted in bulk, where the dried Maghnite-H+ was added to a flask containing 5 g of hexadecamethylcyclooctasiloxane. This flask was placed in an oil bath and heated to 70 °C while being stirred under reflux conditions. After 8 hours, the reaction was terminated by deactivating the Maghnite-H+ with the addition of cold water to the mixture. The Maghnite-H+ was then recovered through filtration, and the resulting filtrate was precipitated in methanol (a non-solvent). The insoluble polymer product was subsequently dried in a vacuum at 80 °C for 6-8 hours and weighed. Any excess water was eliminated by evaporation at 105 °C, with the difference between the initial volume and the amount recovered indicating the quantity of water required to halt the reaction.
