Lubricants

Lubricants are substances typically used to reduce friction, reduce wear, and cool and lubricating mechanical parts. With the development of technology, in addition to reducing friction and wear, some special requirements for lubricauts have been put forward with different working environments and working conditions. This requires formulators to constantly update and improve the lubricant. Deformulation is usually the starting point for developing new formulations or improving existing formulations. Deformulation of lubricants is a method that allows, with the help of various chemical analysis method, to determine the nature and the quantity of its components and to provide specific information about the interaction of the components, thus assisting in making decisions regarding product innovation. It also assists quality control, exploring areas of patent infringement or investigating lawsuits upon patent expiration and many more. Alfa Chemistry has decades of experience in providing deformulation services for diverse products and materials. Our experts are intimately familiar with your requirements and can design value-adding solutions to facilitate the understanding of various components in a formulation.

Meet Our Services

Alfa Chemistry's deformulation lab has the ability to test a wide range of commercial & industrial lubricants. And we use a range of analytical techniques and traditional extraction methods to identify and quantify all the components in lubricant products.

Lubricant products we deformulate include, but are not limited to:

  • According to the physical state of the lubricants, we can test liquid lubricants or lubricating oils, semi-solid lubricants or greases, and solid lubricants.
  • According to the applications of the lubricants, we can test automotive lubricants (Gasoline engine oils, diesel engine oils, flushing oil, 2 cycle engine oil, automotive gear oils, transmission fluids, automatic transmission fluids, agricultural machinery lubricants, automotive greases, other automotive lubricant...), industrial lubricants (Hydraulic oils, turbine oils, general purpose oils, multi-purpose oils, sewing machine oils, bearing oil for machine tools, slideway oils, gear oils, mist oils, compressor oils, vacuum pump oils, refrigerating machine oils, heat transfer oils, film-type bearing oils, food machinery lubricants, electrical insulating oils, air conditioning compressor oils...), metalworking fluids (Water-insoluble cutting fluids, water-soluble cutting fluids, cutting fluids for crystals, quenching oils, rust preventive oils, press oils, electric discharge machining oils, rolling oils...), marine lubricants (Cylinder oils, system oils, engine oils for trunk piston engines, engine oils for fishing boats...), food grade lubricant, medical surgical instrument lubricant, human lubricant (Artificial joint lubricant)...
  • According to the source of the lubricants, we can test mineral lubricants, synthetic lubricants and biolubricant.

Alfa Chemistry has extensive experience and many successful cases in the analysis and testing of lubricants, and we can deformulate almost all lubricants.

Ingredients contained in lubricant products we test include, but are not limited to:

  • Base oil: Mineral oils, vegetable oils or synthetic liquids such as polyalpha-olefin (PAO), synthetic esters, polyalkylene glycols (PAG), phosphate esters, perfluoropolyether (PFPE), alkylated naphthalenes (AN), silicate esters, ionic fluids, multiply alkylated cyclopentanes (MAC)...
  • Additives: Pour point depressants, anti-foaming agents, viscosity index improvers (VIIs), antioxidants, detergents, corrosion inhibitors, anti-wear additives, extreme pressure (anti-scuffing) additives, friction modifiers, stabilizer, dispersant, flow point improver, metal passivator, emulsifier, rust inhibitor, deemulsifier...
  • Others: Graphite, molybdenum disulphide and tungsten disulphide (These are often found in dry lubricants)...
