Clodronic acid is an anti-osteoporotic drug with potent anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects manifested by reductions in biomarkers IL-1β, IL-6 and TNF-α.
Stress fractures are common injuries caused by repetitive microtrauma to the bone, and are more common in athletes. A clinical study reports the use of clodronate for the treatment of unicortical stress fractures in the anatomical neck of the right femur. Conventional treatment is primarily based on restriction of physical activity, application of ice, and administration of analgesics and anti-inflammatory drugs.
In this report, the patient was taking the drug clodronate as scheduled without any further treatment and without restriction of physical activity. Following the proposed treatment, this patient required a rest period of 9 weeks, not 16 weeks as expected by the A&G classification. This study shows that the proposed treatment provides a shorter recovery time and does not include the use of crutches, physical therapy and anti-inflammatory drugs.
