Corrosion Inhibitory Effect of Benzyltriphenylphosphine Chloride on Magnesium Alloys Although it has been demonstrated in the past that the cations of benzyltriphenylphosphine chloride (BPP) can cover the magnesium surface to repel corrosive species, the inhibition efficiency of BPP is not satisfactory due to the Cl- anion in BPP. Therefore, in this work the authors aim to discover other compounds that form "coupling inhibitors" with BPP to explore potential corrosion inhibitors for magnesium alloys.
In order to explore highly efficient synergistic inhibitors, the researchers studied the corrosion inhibition effects of single BPP, single L-histidine (L-His) and BPP/L-His mixture on magnesium alloys in sodium chloride solution.
Research Highlights
1. EIS tests show that the BPP/L-His mixture can successfully retard the corrosion of magnesium alloys in 0.05 wt.% NaCl solution, and the protection efficiency is as high as 89.5%.
2. BPP and L-His show synergistic effect on the corrosion inhibition effect of magnesium alloy, which is a potential high-efficiency synergistic inhibitor.
3. Combining multiple characterizations and theoretical calculations, the authors elucidate the synergistic inhibitory mechanism of BPP and L-His.
On the one hand, BPP will not only be adsorbed on the surface, but also activate the porous passivation layer on the surface of the magnesium alloy to form a protective film and inhibit corrosion.
On the other hand, the adsorbed L-His would repel the Cl- anions in the NaCl solution to further reduce the corrosion. In addition, the cation of BPP acts as a bridge between magnesium and L-His to form a stable complex, which contributes to the formation of a uniform and dense protective film on the surface of magnesium.
