Potassium chloride (KCl) is a metal halide salt composed of potassium and chlorine. KCl is most commonly used to make fertilizers because the growth of many plants is limited by potassium availability. In medical applications, KCl is used to treat hypokalemia. In food processing, KCl can be used to mix with sodium chloride (NaCl) to improve taste and form low sodium salt. In addition, KCl is an important chemical raw material that can be used to manufacture potassium hydroxide and potassium metal.
This study introduces a new method to prepare urea potassium phosphate (UPK) by modifying urea phosphate (UP) with the addition of KCl. The application of UP can reduce the soil pH value, reduce the fixation of phosphorus by soil, and improve the utilization rate of phosphorus in alkaline soil. However, the nutritional elements of UP are unbalanced, only containing N and P, and it is only used as a fertilizer additive in the market. At the same time, the crystallization fluidity of UP is low, which is not conducive to industrial production. This research adopts co-crystallization technology, which not only solves the problems of low dispersion and poor uniformity of solid products, but also improves the shape, fluidity, hygroscopicity and stability of product crystals. Adding KCl during the crystallization process can make NPK compound fertilizer, that is, potassium urea phosphate (UPK).
Research Highlights
> Statistical analysis showed that the molarity of KCl and the concentration of phosphoric acid had a significant positive effect on the yield of UPK and the content of K2O, respectively.
> The addition of KCl changes the crystal form of UP, reduces the aspect ratio of the crystal form, increases the fluidity of the crystal, and is beneficial to industrial production.
> In addition, KCl modified urea phosphate can provide an effective method for the efficient utilization of phosphorus in saline-alkali soils, contributing to the global improvement of saline-alkali soils.
