Infrared Laser Decolorization Method for Vat Yellow 2 as a Model Dye

A method for decolorization of vat dyed cotton fabrics based on infrared laser irradiation was evaluated using C. I. Vat Green 1, C. I. Vat Yellow 2 and C. I. Vat Red 13 as model dyes. The experiments showed that moderate laser energy density of infrared laser led to decolorization of dyed cotton fabric with relatively low fiber damage. It was observed that the dye protected the dyed cotton fabric from infrared laser. The color intensity of the dye had the highest negative value in the case of C. I. Vat Yellow 2, which means that the most stable vat dye according to color measurement is C. I. Vat Yellow 2.
Preparation of dyed samples
· All experiments used a 100% cotton fabric with a twill-weave (3/1) and a fabric areal weight of 259 g m-2. The fabric had a warp density of 31 threads/cm, a weft density of 14 threads/cm, and a fabric thickness of 0.58 mm.
· Various aqueous solutions containing different amounts of vat dye (0.2, 0.5, 1, 1.5, and 3% w.o.f.) were used to dye the cotton fabric. The cotton samples were dyed using the M I method following the standard dyeing process, with caustic soda and sodium hydrosulphite added. The liquor ratio was 1:50, and the dyeing time was 60 minutes. The samples were dyed in a laboratory dyeing machine with infrared heating, rinsed with cold water after dyeing, and then dried at 100 °C in a laboratory drier.
