A series of functional diamines with different side chains such as long alkyl, short alkyl and rigid alicyclic structures were synthesized. Subsequently, a series of PIs were copolymerized with PMDA, PDA and functional diamines as raw materials, and the mechanism of vertical alignment of liquid crystals induced by side chain polyimide (PI) films was studied. Among them, hydrogenated abietol can be used to synthesize 3,5-diaminobenzoic acid (7-isopropyl-1,4a-dimethyl-tetradecahydrophenanthren-1-yl)methyl ester (2B).
Synthesis procedure of functional diamine
· A round-bottom flask equipped with a magnetic stirrer was filled with a mixture of 1.391 g (0.005 mol) of hydroabietyl alcohol, 0.76 ml (0.005 mol) of triethylamine, and 40 ml of THF. A solution containing 2.306 g (0.01 mol) of 3,5-dinitrobenzoyl chloride in 20 ml of THF was then added drop-wise to the flask while it was maintained in an ice bath.
· Once the addition of drops was completed, the mixture was stirred at room temperature for 12 hours, after which it was poured into a large volume of water, resulting in the formation of a white solid. This precipitate was collected via Buchner funnel, washed with distilled water, and dried in an oven.
· The crude product was then recrystallized from THF, yielding the pure white solid known as 2A. Subsequently, 2A (0.0035 mol) was placed in a hydrogenation chamber along with a catalytic amount of Pd/C in 20 ml of ethanol. The reaction mixture was stirred under high pressure (1.1 MPa) at 75°C for 24 hours. Afterward, the mixture was hot filtered to eliminate Pd/C, and following the removal of excess solvent, 2B was acquired with a yield of 50%.
