Harvesting of oily marine microalgae by dehydration is an important step in the cost-effective production of algal biomass feedstock. Marine microalgae (Tetraselmis sp. M8) were separated from aqueous media by froth flotation using collectors (surfactants) of different carbon chain lengths, such as dodecylpyridinium chloride (DPC), N-dodecylpropane-1,3-diamine hydrochloride (DN2), dodecylamine hydrochloride (DAH), and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), at different pH values. Algae hydrophobicity, foam stability, and surfactant precipitation were characterized.
The surfactants tested included dodecylpyridinium chloride (DPC, 99% purity), sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS, 98.5% purity), and dodecylamine hydrochloride (DAH, 97% purity), which were used without further purification. N-Dodecylpropane-1,3-diamine hydrochloride (DN) solution was prepared by dissolving N-dodecylpropane-1,3-diamine (97% purity) in hydrochloric acid at a molar ratio of 1: 1. HCl was used to adjust the pH.
