Methoxytriethyleneoxypropyltrimethoxysilane as a Multifunctional Electrolyte Additive for Batteries

Methoxytriethyleneoxypropyltrimethoxysilane (MTE-TMS) is a multifunctional electrolyte additive that can stabilize the interface between nickel-rich layered oxide cathodes and graphite anodes in full batteries. Chemical tests show that adding 1 wt% MTE-TMS can significantly improve the long-term cycle stability of the full battery. After 100 cycles at C/5 rate, the maximum capacity reaches 198 mAh g-1, the capacity retention rate is as high as 84%, and the upper limit voltage cutoff is 4.3 V vs Li+/Li.
Electrochemical full cell assembly with MTE-TMS additive
· Coin-type electrochemical full cells (PSI standard cells) were constructed using a cathode made of LiNi0.85Co0.1Mn0.05O2 (NCM851005), a graphite anode, a Celgard 2400 separator, and a standard electrolyte containing 1 wt% MTE-TMS additive. This assembly was performed in an argon-filled glove box. The charge-discharge cycling performance of the cells was evaluated over a voltage range of 3.0 to 4.25 V (equivalent to 4.3 V vs Li+/Li) at a C-rate of C/5 (42 mA g-1), following two initial formation cycles at C/10 (21 mA g-1) using an Arbin battery cycler. All electrochemical measurements were conducted at room temperature.
· In a supplemental experiment to assess the effectiveness of the additive in full cells, the graphite anodes were pre-lithiated. For this pre-lithiation process, the graphite anodes were combined with metallic lithium in half-cells and charged to a voltage of 0.05 V vs Li+/Li. Subsequently, the anodes were rinsed in electrolyte and assembled into full cells with pristine NMC851005 cathodes.
