Biodegradable Polymers Prepared from Glycolic Acid for Biomedical Applications

Swider, Edyta, et al. Acta biomaterialia, 2018, 73, 38-51.

Polylactic-glycolic acid (PLGA) is one of the most widely used biodegradable polymers and can be synthesized by the condensation polymerization of lactic acid and glycolic acid. This typically results in copolymers of low molecular weight and broad molar mass distribution. PLGA can be further prepared into nano/micron particles to meet various biomedical applications.
Preparation and applications of PLGA particles
· Conventional preparation methods include single and double emulsion-solvent evaporation method, nanoprecipitation, spray-drying, emulsification/salting-out, and more.
· New design methods for PLGA particles include microfluidic platforms, membrane extrusion emulsification, and PRINT technique, etc.
· Smart corresponding nanomaterials based on PLGA particles can be used as therapeutic agents, drug carriers and diagnostic agents in the biomedical field.
