A series of Fe(III)-acetate complexes can be successfully prepared via a simple synthetic scheme. In this synthesis system, Fe(OAc)2 reacts with salan, salen and salalen ligands in ethanol to prepare Fe(III)-acetate complexes. These Fe(III)-acetate complexes can further be used in CO2/epoxide selective coupling and lactide polymerization.
· Synthesis of Fe(III)-acetate complexes
Fe(OAc)2 (0.174 g, 1.0 mmol) was placed in a round bottom flask in the glovebox. In air, ethanol (10 mL) was added to the Fe(OAc)2 to form a brown suspension. The ligand (1.0 mmol) was added as a solid to this mixture and refluxed for 2.5 hours and left to cool to room temperature. After Büchner filtration and rinsing with cold ethanol, the final product was isolated and dried.
· General polymerisation methods and procedures
All polymerisations were carried out using Schlenk flasks with J Youngs taps under inert conditions. Polymerisations were generally carried out in a ratio of 100:1:1:1 [LA]:[Fe]:[BnOH]:[NEt3]. Fe(X)OAc (0.028 mmol) and rac-lactide (0.40 g, 2.80 mmol) were placed in a flask and dry toluene (4 mL) and triethylamine (0.028 mmol) and benzyl alcohol (0.028 mmol) were added. The flask was placed in the preheated oil bath (100 °C / 80 °C) for 24 hours.
In the iron (III) acetate/alcohol/acetic acid system, by changing different mixing conditions, different types of nanoscale iron oxide particles can be synthesized. Magnetite was formed in the iron(III) acetate/ethanol system, hematite was formed in the iron(III) acetate/acetic acid/ethanol system, and a mixture of magnetite and hematite was obtained in the iron (III) acetate/octanol system.
Typical Synthesis Procedures
· Iron(III) acetate (1.00 g) was dissolved in absolute ethanol, and the solution was then bubbled with N2 for 20 to 30 min.
· A clear and dark reddish transparent solution was transferred into a 50-mL Teflon-lined stainless steel autoclave and heated at 180 °C for 2, 8 and 16 h for samples ET1, ET2 and ET3, respectively.
· A series of experiments was also performed with iron(III) acetate and octanol for samples OC0 (2 h), OC1(4 h), OC2 (24 h) and OC3 (66 h).
· Some of the experiments were performed with iron(III) acetate (1.00 g) with the addition of acetic acid (5.0 mL) and ethanol (20 mL); the sample was autoclaved for 2 h (sample AC1).
· Others involved iron(III) acetate (1.00 g) with the addition of acetic acid (12.5 mL) and ethanol (12.5 mL); the sample was autoclaved for 2 and 24 h at 180 °C.
