The complexes of 2.3-dihydroxyterephthalic acid and 2.3.4-trihydroxybenzoic acid with copper(i1) and vanadium(iv) in aqueous solution were studied by spectroscopic and potentiometric techniques. The results show that all functional groups of the ligands participate in the formation of the complexes. Rather stable dimers and trimers or tetramers were detected with both metal ions. While the former were EPR silent, the latter could be characterized by EPR spectroscopy.
2,3-Dihydroxyterephthalic acid was synthesized by the method given in reference. The purity of the ligands was checked and the exact concentration of its solution was determined by Gran's method. VO2+ stock solution was prepared as described in reference. The metal concentration was standardized by permanganate titration and the hydrogen ion concentration was standardized by potentiometry using the appropriate Gran's function. The concentration of the Cu2stock solution was measured gravimetrically by precipitation of quinolin-8-olate. The ionic strength of the samples was adjusted to 0.2 mol dm-3 KCl. In all cases, the temperature is 25.0 K 0.1 °C.
