The ternary system, surfactant/fatty alcohol/water, can form a layered structure, forming a permeable network and thus producing a gel. A ternary system gel material of cetearyl alcohol/cetyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTAC)/water mixture was prepared, and the effects of different cooling processes on the structure and properties of the gel material were explored. The results show that the periodic repeating distances of fast and slow cooling are 31.4 and 28.5 nm, respectively, which means that the volume fraction of the fast cooling sample is lower.
Preparation of cetearyl alcohol/CTAC/water ternary gel
· The cetearyl alcohol (CA) concentration was kept constant at 5 wt.%, with 6 wt.% of cetyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTAC) in 89 wt.% of heavy water.
· Samples were prepared by first keeping samples at 85 °C in a water bath for 15 minutes under stirring.
· In the first process after heating, the samples were rapidly cooled down straight after preparation by putting them in a water bath with ice for one hour.
· For the second process, the samples were allowed to cool down quiescently at room temperature without stirring, at an estimated cooling rate of 5 °C/min.
