Evaluation of Dyeing and Dye Release of Polymer-Modified Fabrics Using Acid Blue 281

Zoi G. Lada, et al. Sustainability 2023, 15(4), 3144

Cotton fabrics were modified using two cationic copolymers with different structures that carry active sites for electrostatic and covalent interactions with dyes and cotton. In order to evaluate the dyeing process of the modified fabric and quantify the dye release, acid blue 281 was studied as a representative acid dye.
Acid blue 281 dyeing modified fabrics
· According to the colorimetric analysis results, polymer modification contributes positively to the dye absorption of the fabric. In terms of color intensity, the polymer 2-modified sample showed slightly higher color intensity, indicating better interaction between acid dyes and this modified fabric.
· According to the evaluation results of water-wash decolorization of colored fabrics, the normalized dye release amounts of fabrics modified with polymers 1 and 2 in wash water were 1.63 and 1.66, respectively, while the normalized dye release amounts of unmodified fabrics were 5.03-6.49. This means that the dye release/fastness of both polymer modifiers is similar and significantly lower/higher compared to the unmodified fabric.
