Interaction Analysis of Acid Blue 45 Dye with Polyamide 6,6 According to Surface Free Energy

Espinosa-Jiménez M, et al. Journal of adhesion science and technology, 2002, 16(3), 303-316.

· Acid Blue 45 belongs to the anthraquinone derivative group of dyes and possesses three kinds of polar groups, -OH, -NH2, and -SO3Na, as well as two =O atoms. The polar -NH2 and -COOH end-groups, and the amide -NH-CO- groups present inside the polyamide 6,6 fibers and on their surfaces, may interact with those of the dye chemically, as well as by specific Lewis acid-base, i.e. electron-donor and electron-acceptor, and non-specific Lifshitz-van der Waals interactions.
· Based on the Polyamide 6,6 and Acid Blue 45 surface free energy components and zeta potential changes, it can be concluded that despite the surfaces being negatively charged in a broad pH range (3-11), the adsorption of the dye still takes place on the polyamide surface.
· The attractive forces are stronger than the electrostatic repulsion. This may result from a chemical interaction between -COOH groups of the polyamide and -OH groups of the dye, as well as from hydrogen-bonding interactions between other polar groups present in both the polymer and the dye.
· The sulphonate -SO3Na groups of the dye molecules can dissociate easier than the end-side COOH polar groups on the polyamide surface.
