Preparation of Polyamide 6,10/Biphasic Polylactide Blends

Keridou, Ina, et al. Polymer, 2020, 202, 122676.

Melt blending of polyamide (PA) with polylactide (PLA) is a biobased blend that has attracted much attention. However, conventional PA/PLA blends usually exhibit a coarse droplet matrix morphology with poor interfacial adhesion. Here, the blend preparation strategy of PA with rheology-modified polylactide (PLA REx) can overcome the compatibility challenge.
PLA REx/PA blends via processing and bioblends manufacturing
· Initially, pre-dried PLA was melt compounded with 0.6 wt.% of SAmfE (a multifunctional epoxyfunctionalized reactive agent) in order to tailor PLA melt properties. The manufactured material, referred to as PLA REx was water-cooled and pelletized.
· The PLA REx pellets were melt blended with PA610 using a Brabender batch mixer under a N2 blanket to manufacture five PLA REx/PA bioblends covering the 10-50 wt.% PA composition range. A screw speed of 50 rpm, a residence time of 12 min and a barrel temperature of 235 ºC was used.

Preparation of Nylon/Chitosan Nanowhisker Composites via Melt Blending Method

Jin, Se Bin, et al. Polymers, 2020, 14(24), 5488.

Nylon is a representative synthetic fiber with excellent mechanical properties, and its composite materials have been extensively studied. Natural biomaterials, such as chitosan nanowhiskers (CSW), formed into composites with nylon 6,10 can be used to further improve some of the material properties. Research results show that nylon/CSW nanocomposites exhibit higher melting enthalpy and crystallization temperature, higher viscoelasticity, but deteriorated physical properties.
Preparation procedure of nylon 6, 10/CSW nanocomposites
· A high-concentration nylon/CSW masterbatch was prepared by solvent casting to promote the interaction between the polymer matrix and the bio-based filler.
· Completely dissolve nylon 6,10 in formic acid solvent to prepare nylon solution. 30 wt% CSW was then added to the solution, and trapped air bubbles were removed by sonication for 30 minutes. Stir the mixed solution until complete dispersion of CSW in the nylon solution.
· Pour the homogenized nylon/CSW solution into a petri dish and dry it to obtain a high-concentration nylon/CSW masterbatch.
· Prepare nylon/CSW nanocomposites by extruding the prepared nylon/CSW masterbatch and nylon using a compounding machine.
