Kanamycin sulfate (KS) was utilized to synthesize eco-friendly and stable cellulose-based antibacterial materials with broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity. The material was prepared by cross-linking KS with α-cellulose using glutaraldehyde (GA) as a cross-linking agent.
The synthesis involved dispersing α-cellulose in an acidic aqueous solution containing varying KS-to-cellulose mass ratios (1:200, 1:100, and 1:10). After initial mixing, GA was added to facilitate cross-linking, and the reaction was conducted under controlled stirring in the dark for 12 hours. The resulting products, named KSC 1/200, KSC 1/100, and KSC 1/10, were thoroughly washed and freeze-dried. A control sample (CL), consisting of pure α-cellulose treated under identical conditions without KS, was also prepared for comparison.
The integration of KS into the cellulose matrix enhanced the material's antibacterial efficacy, offering a potential solution for the development of sustainable and cost-effective antimicrobial systems.
