Thermochromic Composite Prepared by Crystal Violet Lactone and Its Coating Application

Li, Wenbo, et al. Polymers, 2022, 14(20), 4443.

Thermochromic composite was prepared with crystal violet lactone (CVL), bisphenol A (BPA) and tetradecanol as raw materials. The color-changing composite was encapsulated in microcapsules and added to alkyd resin to improve the coating performance. The comprehensive performance of the coating was optimal when the microcapsule concentration was 10%, which laid a technical foundation for thermochromic coating on metal surfaces.
Preparation of CVL thermochromic composite and its microcapsules
· Tetradecanol was heated to 50 ℃ in a water bath to a molten state, and then BPA and CVL were added. The magnetic rotor was placed in the water bath for stirring. After stirring evenly, the water bath was slowly heated to 70 ℃. After stirring for a while at 400 rpm, the solution poured out clear. Cooled to room temperature, it was a dark blue powder, the ready-made colour-changing material. The color-changing compound did best with the lowest colour change temperature (25 °C) and the mass ratio CVL:BPA:tetradecanol was 1:3:60 with 1.5 h reaction time in 90 °C water bath.
· Crystal violet lactone thermochromic microcapsules were prepared by an in-situ interfacial polymerization method. First, a urea-formaldehyde prepolymer wall material was synthesized. Separately, the crystal violet lactone core material was dissolved in water. The core material solution was then emulsified using an ultrasonic emulsifier. Subsequently, the prepolymer wall material was slowly added to the core material emulsion, forming microcapsules. Finally, the microcapsules were filtered, washed, and dried to obtain the final product.

Thermosensitive Luminescent Fiber Based on Reversible Thermochromic Crystal Violet Lactone

Jin, Yang, et al. Dyes and Pigments, 2017, 146, 567-575.

A thermosensitive luminescent fiber (TLF) was prepared with rare earth luminescent materials (SZSO, SAO, YOS) as luminescent sources, reversible thermochromic crystal violet lactone (CVL) pigment as luminescent converter and polyacrylonitrile (PAN) as matrix. The thermosensitiveness of the TLF was qualitatively confirmed by observation in water at 40 °C of the TLF, which was brightly luminescent and thermosensitive.
Preparation of PAN thermosensitive luminous fiber
Rare earth luminescent materials and CVL thermochromic pigments were incorporated into a homogeneous PAN/DMSO solution to create the spinning dope, with a mass-volume concentration ratio of 20% PAN to DMSO. The CVL thermochromic pigments were added in mass ratios of 3%, 5%, and 8%, resulting in samples designated as 3%, 5%, and 8%. Additionally, the rare earth luminescent materials (SZSO, SAO, and YOS) were blended for 10 minutes using mechanical mixing, also with mass ratios of 3%, 1%, and 6% relative to the spinning dope. Wet spinning was performed with a 22 G syringe and a boosting device, feeding the solution into a coagulation bath of deionized water at room temperature at a rate of 6 mL/min.
