The molecular formula of ammonium salt is R4N+, and when R is an alkyl or aryl group, it becomes a quaternary ammonium salt. Commonly used as disinfectants, fabric softeners, and emulsifiers, quaternary ammonium salts are widely used in healthcare facilities, food processing plants, and households because of their broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity and ease of use.
Recently, the application potential of quaternary ammonium salts in the field of advanced materials research has also been widely explored, such as for improving the performance of perovskite light-emitting diodes. This work reports a dual passivation strategy to reduce the trap density and improve the morphology of MAPbBr3 films. Three kinds of quaternary ammonium salts were introduced into the precursor solution as ionic additives to prepare perovskite films, and effectively passivated the defects in MAPbBr3 films, thereby improving the maximum brightness, current efficiency, etc. of perovskite LEDs.
The schematic diagram of the additive-assisted solution casting of the perovskite film and the structures of three quaternary ammonium salts are shown in the figure. The three quaternary ammonium salts are tetrabutylammonium bromide (TBABr), benzyltriethylammonium bromide (BTEABr), and benzyltributylammonium bromide (BTABr). The findings reveal that all these additives contribute to the deposition of high-quality perovskite films with higher film coverage and smaller grain sizes.
