4-(Dimethylamino)benzaldehyde can be used to prepare Schiff base through condensation reaction, for example, with benzamide, S-benzyldithiocarbazate, etc. The Schiff bases have strong biological activities, including antifungal, anticancer, antibacterial and other activities. The obtained Schiff bases can further enhance the catalytic activity by complexing with transition metals (Ni, Co, Zn, Pb). In this study, a Schiff base N'-(4-dimethylaminobenzylidene) was synthesized in high yields from the condensation of 4-(dimethylamino)benzaldehyde and S-benzhydryldithiocarbamate in neutral media, as shown in the synthetic route diagram. Furthermore, Schiff bases together with their NS donor groups act as uninegative bidentate ligands and form neutral bischelated Ni(II), Cu(II) and Zn(II) complexes. The ligands and their metal complexes showed remarkable antibacterial activity against certain bacterial strains, among which Cu(II) and Ni(II) complexes showed high antibacterial potency.
