Indium(III) chloride (InCl3) is used as a catalyst in synthetic organic chemistry for various organic transformations to obtain highly selective products. Furthermore, InCl3 and solvent-free combinatorial reactions are well-known environmentally friendly methods that also generally offer improved selectivities, increased reaction rates, cleaner products, and operational simplicity in organic transformations. Therefore, InCl3 can be used as a Lewis acid catalyst under solvent-free conditions for the preparation of bioactive phthalazine and pyrazole derivatives via a one-pot three-component reaction. The applications of these derivatives in bioactive pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and functional materials are attractive and important. In this work, the researchers developed an efficient, inexpensive and environmentally friendly synthetic method to obtain novel 3-amino-2-benzoyl-1-aryl-1H-pyrazolo[1,2-b ]phthalazine-5,10-dione and 3-amino-2-benzoyl-1-aryl-1H-pyrazolo[1,2-a]pyridazine-5,8-dione derivatives. The specific synthesis method is through the one-pot multi-compound condensation reaction of phthalohydrazide or maleic hydrazide, aldehydes and aryl acetonitrile in the presence of a catalytic amount of InCl3 as a catalyst at 80 °C under solvent-free conditions. In addition, it is worth mentioning that the method is tolerant to most substrates and does not require extraction and column chromatography.
