Plaster of paris (calcium sulfate hemihydrate = CSH; CaSO4·1/2MH2O) has a long history as a bone substitute, as its first use was reported as early as 1892. There are two types of CSH, including α-CSH and β-CSH. Although α-CSH and β-CSH have different crystal structures, they are both biosoluble, i.e. freely soluble under physiological conditions.
In this work, an injectable composite paste formulation for bone repair consisted of two inorganic components and three biopolymers. The inorganic components are α-CSH and calcium-deficient hydroxyapatite (CDHA), and the biopolymers are gelatin, alginate and chondroitin sulfate. The comprehensive performance analysis test results indicated that this paste could be a promising injectable biomaterial for bone regeneration applications. Among them, α-CSH has been used to fill bone defects due to its considerable osteoconductivity, complete absorption without any inflammatory response, hemostasis induction, angiogenic properties, and enzymatic degradation. When α-CSH bioactive mineral is used as a composite bone plaster together with other polymer components, it can also improve the key properties of injectable bone plaster, such as proper injectability and strong cohesion, processability and proper rheological properties.
