Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry was employed to investigate the complete ontogenetic development of oil gland secretions in the parthenogenetic oribatid mite species, Archegozetes longisetosus Aoki. The analysis revealed that both the absolute amount of oil gland secretion and the secretion adjusted for body weight increased throughout ontogeny, exhibiting an allometric relationship with body weight (i.e., ontogenetic age).
Furthermore, distinct variations were observed in the relative amounts of chemical components across different developmental stages; however, the overall qualitative composition-including 2,6-HMBD, neral, nerolidinyl, γ-carboxaldehyde, decacyclan, 7-pentadecene, pentadecane, 6,9-heptadecadiene, 8-heptadecene, and heptadecadecene-remained stable.
This study identified the substances 7-pentadecene, 6,9-heptadecadiene, and 8-heptadecaene, which are prevalent in both Oribatida and Astigmata and are regarded as oil gland secretions in these groups. Notably, the DMDS derivative of C15:1 (peak F, Figure 1(h)) was characterized by a molecular ion at m/z = 304 and diagnostic ions at m/z = 145 and m/z = 159, confirming its identification as 7-pentadecene.
