Interaction Between Sodium Edetate and Sodium Hypochlorite Rinses

Biel P, et al. Journal of endodontics, 2017, 43(4), 657-661.

Clinically useful all-in-one endodontic irrigants with proteolytic and decalcifying properties remain elusive. Alkaline sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) solution is the most widely used endodontic irrigant. Sodium edetate (tetrasodium EDTA, Na4EDTA) is one of the candidates in endodontic research as a hypochlorite-compatible decalcifying agent or chelating agent. Studies have evaluated the chemical effects of Na4EDTA dissolved directly in sodium hypochlorite rinses in polypropylene syringes.
Effect of sodium edetate on sodium hypochlorite rinse agent
· The maximum solubility of Na4EDTA in water (weight/total weight) is 38.2%±0.8%.
· The short-term compatibility of Na4EDTA salts with NaOCl solutions is rather low and decreases at higher concentrations of either compound.
· The corresponding mixture between NaOCl and Na4EDTA salts resulted in a 95% reduction in available chlorine after 1 minute.
· A mixture of 3% Na4EDTA and 1% NaOCl is more stable, but only for 30 minutes. After 60 minutes, Na4EDTA lost 34% of its calcium complexing ability.
