In an ultrafast kinetic spectroscopic study of hexabromoplatinum(IV) complexes in aqueous and alcoholic solutions, laser excitation in the range of 400 to 420 nm was used. The photochemical behavior of the Pt(IV)Br6(2-) complex upon excitation at different wavelengths is identical. The quantum yield of Pt(IV)Br6(2-) photohydration does not depend on the radiation wavelength.
Primary photoprocesses of hexabromoplatinum(IV) complexes
· Regardless of the excitation wavelength, the photochemical properties of the complexes arise from intermediate reactions that proceed in the picosecond time range. These intermediates were identified as Pt(IV)Br5- upon photolysis of Pt(IV)Br6(2-).
· The difference in the exciting light wavelengths has an impact only on the first step of these processes, i.e., transition from the Franck-Condon excited state to intermediates.
Hexabromoplatinum(IV) complexes can be synthesized from sodium hexabromoplatinum(IV) (Na2PtBr6) according to published procedures. Furthermore, fluorescence up-conversion is used as an additional technique to study early processes in the photophysics of Pt(IV)Br6(2-), a material excited at 380 nm in aqueous solution.
Fluorescence up-conversion technique
· Luminescence decay traces were recorded at 500 and 540 nm. The experimental points were globally fitted by a function convoluted with a Gaussian function, which was used to model the shape of a pump pulse.
· The calculated RMS duration of a laser pulse is 120 ± 20 fs FWHM. The characteristic time of luminescence decay is 140 ± 40 fs, which coincides within the experimental error with the characteristic time of 3Pt(IV)Br5- intermediate formation (150 ± 30 fs) obtained from TA measurements.
· Due to the very fast decay and weak intensity of the luminescence of Pt(IV)Br6(2-), it can be detected only using the up-conversion technique.
