Dysprosium (Dy) is an element with a large magnetocrystalline anisotropy field. Manufacturing Nd-Fe-B magnets with high coercivity is one of the potential ways to synthesize high-performance permanent magnets. The coercive force of Nd-Fe-B magnets is controlled by the microstructure. Adding dysprosium (Dy) to the area near the grain boundary is an effective method to increase the coercive force.
Synthesis procedure of dysprosium-modified Nd-Fe-B magnets
· First, Nd2Fe14B nanoparticles were synthesized via the sol-gel method.
· The (Nd1-xDyx)2Fe14B nanoparticles with different amounts of Dy were prepared by mixing synthesized Nd2Fe14B powders with different weight percentage of Dy powders (purity 99.9%, 200 mesh) using a mill. Hardened steel containers including steel balls and powders were applied in the mechanical alloying process.
· The as-milled powder was then heat treated under vacuum (10-5 Pa) at 800 °C for 60 min.
