Dioctyl adipate as a plasticizer to improve the low-temperature properties of asphalt

Zhen Fu, et al. International Journal of pavement engineering, 2022, 23(8): 2644-2653.

Dioctyl adipate (DOA) is a kind of modifier commonly used in the plastic industry. DOA can impart the modified products with a good low-temperature flexibility, light resistance and a certain water resistance.
· The plasticizer DOA was added to the base asphalt to achieve contents of 1.5%, 2.0%, 2.5% and 3.0% by weight of the asphalt binder.
· Comprehensive analysis of the high and low temperature performance of DOA modified asphalt shows that the optimum content is 3.0%.
· Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR) indicates that the plasticizer and asphalt binder mainly undergo a physical blending reaction.

Rheological Properties of Dioctyl Adipate-modified Asphalt Binder

Fu, Zhen, et al. 23.8 (2022): 2644-2653.

Referring to the successful application of cold-resistant plasticizers in the plastics industry, dioctyl adipate (DOA) plasticizer was selected to improve the low-temperature performance of asphalt. Dynamic shear rheometer (DSR) and bending beam rheometer (BBR) were used to test and analyze the high and low temperature properties of plasticizer modified asphalt binder, and the residual creep rate ratio was proposed to evaluate the anti-aging performance of asphalt binder. Rheological property analysis shows that DOA can improve the aging resistance of asphalt binder. The low-temperature performance of DOA-modified asphalt binder is improved by 30%. At the same temperature and softening point increment, the residual creep rate of plasticizer-modified asphalt binder is more than 15% higher than that of base asphalt. 22.5% lower than base asphalt, meaning improved anti-aging properties.
The plasticizer dioctyl adipate was added to the base asphalt to achieve levels of 1.5%, 2.0%, 2.5% and 3.0% by weight of the asphalt binder. Lower contents are accompanied by insignificant modification effects. When the dosage exceeds 3.0%, the high-temperature performance of the modified asphalt binder will be significantly reduced. Modified asphalt binder was prepared in a high shear mixer at approximately 130°C and 1000 r/min. Then, the following tests were conducted to study the performance of plasticizer-modified asphalt binder and control samples. A systematic study was carried out on the ductility and softening point of different types of bitumen.
