Adsorption of Acid Violet 48 on Polyurethane/Chitosan Composite Foam

Lee, Ho Cheon, et al. Fibers and Polymers 10 (2009), 636-642.

A series of polyurethane (PU)/chitosan composite foams with different chitosan contents (5~20 wt%) were prepared for adsorption of acid violet 48 dye. In this material, the amine groups of chitosan serve as binding sites for acid dye sulfonate ions in aqueous solution. Therefore, the adsorption capacity of the material for acid violet 48 increases with the increase of chitosan content.
Acid violet 48 dye adsorption experiments
· Aqueous solutions (20 ml) with the controlled concentration of Acid Violet 48 were taken into sample vials (40 ml) with screw caps.
· The foam adsorbent of 0.1 g was added in aqueous solutions with the predetermined dye concentration. The adsorption experiments were performed in a water bath at 30 °C. The shaking speed was 150 rpm.
· The concentration changes of acid dyes in aqueous solutions during adsorption experiments were evaluated by using a UV-visible spectroscope. Acid Violet 48 shows two dominant absorption bands at 551 and 591 nm in UV-visible spectra.
