Acid black 234 is a genotoxic azo dye commonly used as a leather dye. Photocatalytic degradation is considered a promising strategy for dye degradation. For example, chitosan zinc sulfide nanoparticles (CS-ZnS-NPs) were developed as an effective photocatalyst for the degradation of toxic dyes.
Photocatalytic degradation experiment
· The photocatalytic degradation of Acid Black 234 was evaluated using CS-ZnS-NPs as photocatalyst under UV irradiation.
· For photocatalytic experiments, 30 mg CS-ZnS-NPs were added to 30 mL of 30 ppm solution of Acid Black 234 for 0-165 min at 25-35 °C and pH 3.0-7.0. The experimental setup comprised of glass apparatus along with constant stirring under UV radiation.
· After UV irradiation, dye solution was centrifuged to separate the photocatalyst and the absorbance of the solution was determined using a BMS UV-1602 double beam UV-Vis spectrophotometer at their corresponding wavelengths. The percentage of degradation of dyes was determined through Eq.
Using acid black 234 (AB-234) dye as a template, molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) adsorbents with extremely high selectivity for AB-234 dye can be prepared through bulk polymerization. This MIP sorbent can be used for the rapid determination of AB-234 dye in water samples and exhibits high selectivity for AB-234 dye (94%).
Preparation of Acid Black 234 Dye MIP
· Dissolve 0.215 g of Acid Black 234 dye in 10 mL of methanol and stir for 10 min.
· Then, 150 mmol of methacrylic acid (MAA) was added and left to stand for two hours, followed by 225 mmol of ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA), and left to stand for 15 minutes.
· Finally, 2 mg of 2,2'-azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) initiator was added and kept in a 60 °C water bath for 24 h to obtain the MIP product.
· In the above preparation process, EGDMA, MAA, AB-234, AIBN and methanol were used as cross-linking agents, functional monomers, templates, initiators and porogenic solvents respectively.
Acid black 234 (AB-234) is one of the dyes commonly used in the textile industry and is therefore also a representative dye in textile wastewater. Acid black 234 is a common model dye in the research of various dye adsorption materials, such as biocomposites. A series of biocomposites have been studied for the removal of AB-234 through biosorption, including polyaniline/sugarcane bagasse (Pan/SB), polypyrrole (PPy/SB), polyaniline/chitosan (PAn/Ch ), polyaniline/starch (PAn/St) and polypyrrole/starch (PPy/St).
· Batch adsorption procedure
For the comparison of biosorption capacity of native biosorbents and biocomposite s, AB-234 dye was used and effect of various process variables i.e., contact time, concentration of dye, pH, adsorbent dose and temperature was investigated.
· Column adsorption procedure
Continuous adsorption was performed in a glass column of 20 mm ID and 43 cm length that was with a known quantity of biosorbent and dye solution was passed through it. A steel sieve attached with glass wool layer was attached at the lower portion of column. After specific time intervals, the dye solutions were collected and absorbance was measured at 609 nm.
