Adsorption of Acid Red 37 Dye by Graphene Oxide/Chitosan/Polyvinyl Alcohol Composite Sponge

Xiaoqi Xu, et al. Water Environ Res. 2017, 89(6), 555-563.

Acid red 37 (AR 37) is a synthetic azo dye used primarily in the textile industry to color fabrics. In addition to textile dyeing, AR 37 is also used in the research field as a pH indicator. It can change from red to yellow when the pH of a solution changes from acidic to alkaline.
Like other azo dyes, AR 37 raises concerns due to its potential environmental and health impacts. Adsorption is a more competitive dye removal treatment process because it is simple, efficient and widely applicable.
A graphene oxide/chitosan/polyvinyl alcohol composite sponge (GCS) has been developed to adsorb acid red 37 dye from wastewater. The optimal adsorption capacity value of AR 37 on GCS can reach 421.5 mg/g.
Dye adsorption experiment: Batch equilibrium adsorption experiments were carried out to determine the dye adsorption of GCSs. Typically, 0.5 g GCS was added into an AR 37 solution (100 mL, 150 mg/L) at ambient temperature. The concentration of AR 37 was analyzed every 2 hours by an ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometer.
