Reactive red 11 is an azo dye commonly used in textile and paper coloring industries. In this work, reactive red 11 was used as a target model dye and decolorization was performed by various bacteria isolated from wastewater samples. The results showed that 2 bacterial strains showed high decolorization of reactive red 11 and were identified as Enterobacter sp. and gamma proteobacteria, respectively.
Biodegradation experiment of reactive red 11
· Initially, a 100 ml LB media solution was prepared containing dye at a concentration of 250mg/l, which had the highest dye degrading culture.
· Following a 24-hour incubation period at 37°C, the LB media was then inoculated into Minimal media in five separate conical flasks, each containing 100 ml. The flasks were incubated for 24, 72, and 120 hours respectively.
· The organic compounds present in the dye-containing culture in Minimal media were extracted using ethyl acetate as a solvent and a separating funnel.
· The lower dye phase was removed, leaving behind the ethyl acetate phase which was then evaporated at room temperature overnight. The resulting powdery residue of organic compounds was analyzed using GC-MS.
